Guidelines for 2020 Scholarship
This year’s submission should be inspired by the poem Ithaka, by C.P. Cavafy.
Use this poem as inspiration to reflect on the following prompt.
How has the journey to mastery in the world of wine changed and rewarded you?
*This does not have to be a personal essay. Feel free to write it as a creative story, or present it in a unique way. Poems, short stories, and entertaining narratives are encouraged.
GUIDELINES
Unlike a typical MW essay, entrants are encouraged to approach the topic with a more creative voice. This does not have to be a personal essay. Feel free to write it as a creative story, or present it in a unique way. Poems, short stories, or entertaining narratives are encouraged. Be descriptive and compelling. Submissions need not be in a particular format with an introduction, body, and conclusion, though organized thoughts and clear messaging are required.
· Submissions must be written in English.
· Submissions must not exceed 1,000 words (excluding name, word count, and statement of permission to publish)
· Submissions must be original, unique thoughts from the entrant. No previously submitted or published work will be accepted.
· Please be advised that the winning essay (and potentially others) will be publicly published on the George T. Gamblin Memorial website along with the winner’s name, and therefore by submission, entrants grant permission for this publication.
SUBMISSION INSRRUCTIONS
· Please email your submission to gtgmemorial@gmail.com on or before November 1, 2020. No essays will be accepted after November 1, 2020. The winning essay will be announced the week of November 22, 2020.
· Please email your submission from an email address that you check regularly, as this is how we will contact the winner.
· Please note that all submissions will be read anonymously prior to deciding the winner.
· Submissions should include the entrant’s first and last name, MW Stage, word count, and selected wine pairing at the top of the first page of their submissions. You must also include a statement granting permission to publish: “By submitting this essay for the George T. Gamblin Memorial Scholarship, I grant permission for its publication on the website. I confirm that this is my own, unique work, not previously submitted or printed in any other publication.” Below is an example:

AWARD
The award recipient will receive $500 cash to be used toward their studies.
